Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) is a unique place to visit if you are interested in science and the stars. PARI was initially developed by NASA to track satellites and monitor manned space flights. PARI is located in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard. The site is a 200 acre campus that contains 30 buildings.
Admission to the PARI grounds is $6.00 and includes a self-guided tour of the grounds and the main building. There is no admission fee for children age 10 and under.
PARI has guided tours of the facility on most Wednesday afternoons at 2 PM for no additional fee. Reservations are necessary and can be made by calling (828) 862-5554. The tours last about 1.5 hours.
Driving time to the site from downtown Brevard is about 30 minutes via mountain roads. For directions, see: Map to PARI.
The Wednesday afternoon guided-tour also features a guided-tour of the Galaxy Walk that is on the grounds right outside the main building. After the tour you can walk around the grounds and enjoy the scenery.
On the second Friday of each month there is an "Evening at PARI". During the evening tour you will hear a talk about recent events in astronomy, and if the weather is clear, PARI will provide optical telescopes to view the planets, moon, and other celestial objects.
